Publish notices with Audiences

A notice's affected components determine its visibility. You choose the components when writing the notice, rather than selecting a separate Audience for the notice itself.

Early access: Use this guide only after Audiences has been enabled and you have tested your component setup with us.

Choose the affected components

  1. Start a new notice and choose the appropriate notice type.
  2. In Affected components, browse or search for the components affected by the incident or maintenance.
  3. Select the relevant components. Searching narrows the list but does not remove selections outside the search results.
  4. Clear the search and review the full selection before continuing.
  5. Write your notice, then open Review & Publish Notice.

Check who can see the notice

  • Public components: the notice is visible to all visitors.
  • Audience-specific components only: review the visibility information and named Audiences before publishing.
  • Public and audience-specific components together: the notice is visible to all visitors. A visitor's component access does not make the notice text private.
  • No components: the notice is public. An empty selection is not a way to create a private notice.

Do not include private details in a notice that includes public components. If different readers need different information, write separate notices and check each one's visibility.

Review notifications separately

Visibility and delivery are different checks. Review who can see the notice, then check the notification options before publishing. Subscribers' component preferences affect the updates they receive; they do not grant access to restricted components.

For an internal trial, use controlled subscribers and check the received updates as well as the status page. Do not assume publishing a notice means every eligible subscriber will receive every notification.

Edit an existing notice

Use Edit beside the affected components. If you search while changing the selection, clear the search to review all selected components before choosing Save changes. Choose Discard changes to leave the saved selection unchanged.

Changing the components can change who can see the notice. Review visibility again before saving a change that would make restricted content public.

Before deleting or moving a component

Contact us first if the component is linked to audience-specific notices. Removing a notice's last component can make the notice public. Do not use component deletion as a way to remove access to a notice.
