Managing who can view Metrics

By default, when you enable metrics on a component, uptime data is visible to everyone who visits your status page. Audience Rules let you restrict metric visibility to specific subscribers, so you can control exactly who sees uptime percentages, impact time, MTTR, and other detailed reporting — both on the status page and via the Status API.

This is useful when you want to:

  • Share detailed reliability data with enterprise customers but not publicly
  • Restrict metrics to internal teams on a private status page
  • Provide uptime reporting only to subscribers on a specific domain (e.g. your customer's organisation)

How Audience Rules work

Audience Rules define conditions that determine which authenticated subscribers can view metrics. Subscribers who don't match any active rule won't see metric data on the status page or receive it through the API.

Rules are applied at the component level, so you can configure different visibility settings for different parts of your service.

Creating an Audience Rule

  1. Navigate to Audience Rules in your page settings
  2. Click Add Rule
  3. Define one or more conditions for the rule

You can match subscribers by:

  • Email address — match a specific individual (e.g. jane@acme.com )
  • Email domain — match all subscribers from an organisation (e.g. @acme.com )

You can combine multiple conditions within a single rule for flexibility.

Applying an Audience Rule to Metrics

Once you've created your rules, assign them to individual component metrics:

  1. Go to the component's Metric settings
  2. Select one or more Audience Rules to apply

You can assign multiple rules to a single component's metrics. A subscriber only needs to match one rule to see the data.

Things to know

  • No rules assigned — metrics are visible to everyone (default behaviour)
  • Rules assigned — only subscribers matching at least one rule can view metrics
  • Status API — audience rules also apply to metric data returned via the API
  • Changes take effect immediately — updating or removing rules instantly changes metric visibility
